The Application of Waterjets in a Stressed Rock Environment

چکیده

The use of high pressure waterjets is becoming increasingly common in industrial operations as a means of improving productivity. Although waterjets were initially developed as a mining tool, they have found only a limited use to the present time. Recent developments in the technology, however, promise the creation of relatively small light-weight equipment for use in mines. It is important in considering the applications of this tool, however, that both its advantages and limitations be understood. This is particularly true when laboratory results are transferred to the predictive behavior of underground machinery. A waterjet cuts with a very narrow slot. When this cut is made in a stressed material such as a pillar on the face of a longwall panel the slot can quite easily be closed by stress relief of the surrounding rock. Strategies to circumvent this problem and tools for the use of waterjets in removing highly stressed ground are discussed with relevance to both drills and excavators which might be used in removing highly stressed ground such as that found in longwall chain pillars.

The Use of Waterjets in Cutting Granite

High pressure waterjets are now entering use on an increasing scale for primary rock excavation in quarries. In order to assess the parameters required for any such rock cutting operation a series of experiments need to be carried out in which the critical operational parameters are identified. This paper seeks to identify such a standard procedure with an explanation with the reasons for choic...

Application of Schmidt rebound number for estimating rock strength under specific geological conditions

A literature review revealed that most of the empirical equations introduced for determination of the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) of rocks based on the Schmidt hammer rebound number (N) are not sufficiently reliable mostly due to the relatively low coefficient of correlations. This is attributed to the fact that in most cases one formula is used for all types of rocks, altho...

A field investigation of application of digital terrestrial photogrammetry to characterize geometric properties of discontinuities in open-pit slopes

In order to analyze the slope stability in open-pit mines, the structural parameters of rock mass such as persistence and spatial orientation of discontinuities are characterized through field surveys, which involve spending high costs and times as well as posing high risks of rock toppling and rock fall. In the present work, a new application of terrestrial digital photogrammetry is introduced...

A state-of-the-art review of mechanical rock excavation technologies

The first step in mining activities is rock excavation in both mine development and production. Constant pressure for cost reduction and creating an improved/safe work environment for personnel has naturally resulted in increased use of mechanical excavation systems in many mining operations. Also, mechanical excavation and mining is more compatible with automation, meaning possibility of reduc...

Experimental investigation on the breakage of hard rock by the PDC cutters with combined action modes

To verify the feasibility and efficiency of rotary-percussive drilling assisted by waterjets in very hard rocks, experiments on the Ž . performance of polycrystalline diamond compact PDC cutters resisting different combined loads of static thrust, impact, cutting and waterjets on Missouri red granite and Halston limestone were investigated. The experiments were conducted by means of a Ž . drop ...
